Lagna (Ascendent)

ॐ श्री गुरावे नमः !

Lagna (Ascendent) : This is the sign that rises in the eastern horizon at the time of the birth of a native, and it determines the physical appearance, general health, longevity and other functional and dysfunctional traits in a native, depending on the Rasi and position of the lord of that Rasi.

In Jyotish, normal lagna is used to draw inference about the native’s life in general, but to get information in specific areas like wealth, business, prosperity, power, marriage etc, the Rasi/House with the special 'lagna's is taken as the first house.

The special lagna's I have already listed in my previous post " Fundamentals of Jyotish", Part I. are used for various determinations like business, health, wealth etc.

This sign changes in every two hours and all 12 signs of the zodiac ascend in one period of 24 hours. So the sign ascending at the instant of birth happens to be the first house in the birth chart or the horoscope.
Very important features that should be determined from the first house are, character of the native, any curse from past life, any wrath of a diety etc.

The bottom line is that the lagna establishes the kind of body, health, life or endurance, as well as noticeable qualities of an individual evident to the world. The lagna varies with the time of the day and the place. So people belonging to all the 12 signs are born on the earth at any given moment or instance. It is described in terms of longitude of the position of the moon. Vedic astrology is based on sidereal astrology that assumes that the stars have a fixed position against which motion of planets is measured.

Lagna: It more or less represents the charachter, physical apperance, intelligence and attitude of the native, in addition to this the soul is represented by Sun and mind is represented by Moon, the 10th house (Karma bhava) represents the purpose of the birth.
all these traits are the actual traits of the native and not the hype created by the world or traits percieved by the world.

Physcial Attributes is influenced by the element of the house with lagna ( Ascendent).

Fire: ( Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) --Robust physique

Earth:(Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)--Stout

Air:( Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)-- Thin

Water:(Cancer, Scorpio, pisces)--Plump with soft muscles

Native with different Lagna/ Moon sign shall have different complexion and it is influenced by:

Surya (Sun)- Dark red complexion

Chandra (Moon)- Fair complexion

Kuja (Mars)- Reddish complexion, short stature

Budh (Mercury)- Excellent skin and brownish complexion (like dry grass)

Guru (Jupiter)- Fair complexion with golden yellow tinge

Shukra (Venus)- Dark complexion

Sani (Saturn)- Black complexion (very dark)

While predicting this, take caution and consider the race also, a native with Moon in ascendent will be fare in complexion when compared with others of the same race with other Grah's (Planets), similarly a native with Sani (Saturn) will be darkest out of all the people with in the same race.

Guna (Character or Nature) is influenced by the Grah.

Sun, Moon and Jupiter, or one of them or two of them in Lagna means the native is of Sattvik Guna in a general sense. which also means knowledge, just, wisdom and philanthropy.

Venus and Mercury, means native is of Rajasik guna. which also means passion and drive.

Mars and Saturn means native is of Tamasik Guna. which also means Anger, impatience, ignorance, destructive nature.

Small story to understand these Guna.

Bhrigu Maharaj (saint) used to have a third eye in his feet and which gave him lot of power and anger, as a result he cursed many including lord Shiva, but Lord shiva is of Tamasik nature, so lot of friction took place between them.

When Bhrigu Maharaj went to see Lord Vishnu, Lord Vishnu happens to be sleep,
this made Bhrigu very angry and he kicked Lord Vishnu on his chest, Lord Vishnu being Sattvik, immediately took note of the saint and asked him politely " Hey sage did your kicking cause any pain to your feet, let me see and give it a little massage", and he took Bhrigu's feet in his hands and with his thumb destroyed the third eye in Bhrigu's feet, this is being sattvik.

On the other hand Lord shiva (Tamasik) when faced with Bhrigu almost tries to kill him with raging anger but stops because of Bhrigu was supposed to carry out some good work on the earth, and Lord Brahma is of Rajasik nature, busy with his creation and his three consorts and he also ignores Bhrigu and gets a curse in return.

This story tell us clearly what sattvik, Rajasik and Tamasik means, because lots of people think sattvik means, being extremely polite and soft only, no it doesn't.

Lord Ramachandra had Jupiter (Exalted) and Moon (Own sign) in his Lagna in Karkataka (Cancer) and we all know his character, nature and attitude, he is called as Purushottama.

To understand the physical attributes of natives, the Grah posited in Lagna and the lord of the sign, called Lagneca, needs to be studied, e.g. If the Lagna is in Mithuna (Gemini) then Lagneca will be Budh (Mercury), hence the position of Mercury becomes very important, dhristi of Grah from other signs on Lagna is also important to see if it is afflicted or further blessed, Also see the house in which Lagnecca is positedm that house is called Paka Lagna, and the lord of that house is called as pakeca, inter exchange between Lagneca and Pakeca is considered very good.

The house which is holding the Lagna will also have a large influence on the characteristics of the native, so the properties of each house will also apply here.

Bhadhakesha:

lord of 11th house for Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn,
lord of 9th house for Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius,
lord of 7th house for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces,

are Bhadhakesha meaning lord of obstacles, and if this lord of obstacles is posited in Lagna, it means some curse or wrath of some diety, the cause and reason of the wrath or curse is seen with the malefic grah (Saturn, Mars, Rahu) or upagrah (Gulika) posited in the 12th house from the house with Bhadhakesha.

If bhadakesha is posited in the Lagna sign, it means that the image of some diety was mutilated (Rahu or Gulika) or broken (Mars) or desecrated (Saturn by dirt) & ( Sun by birds).

To determine the remedy for the same the Avastha of the Grah needs to be determined first and if Rahu is posited in the 12th from Lagna and bhadhakesha is posited in the Lagna, the native is sure cursed by a Sarpent (Devine Sarpa devata), the remedy is music and singing.

but again see if the 12th house is a movable, fixed or dual sign, the remedy would be different for each sign.

If any other Grah is posited with the bhadhakesha in Lagna, check to which sign/house that Grah hold the lordship, if the lord of the 2nd house is conjoined with the bhadhakesh in Lagna, then the hardships are due to the kuladevata, or the worship of Kuladevata in the previous birth was stopped, so the remedy would be to resume the worship.

The general readings are always made with Lagna as the initial point, once the basic information is determined with the lagna, then move to other points of reference like AL, UL, and other special lagnas etc.

Kabir

ॐ श्री गुरावे नमः!

Kabir ( 1440 A.D. ---- 1519 A.D.) Kashi, India, was found on a lotus leaf in a lake called Lahar Talao near Kashi. and was found by Niru and Nima, a childless Mohammedan weaver.

Sayings of Kabir:

The life is passed in turning the beads, but the darkness of the heart is not destroyed, leave the turning of beads by the hand, but turn the beads of your mind.

If you have no devotion to God, you will not gain anything by pilgrimage. you may roam over the country and yet your heart wil be impure. The man who has gone to Varanasi to see Lord Viswanath, but has not destroyed hypocrisy, lust and greed and has no devotion , will gain nothing.

I am very fond of the words of my sweetheart-Beloved ( GOD). I do not get any solace if anybody tries to console me in other ways. If you make a fish lie on a golden cot and give it Ambrosia to drink, it will surely die in no time.

The diamond appraiser only can know the value of the diamond, Kabir says: Only he who has developed devotion can attain God.

Show thou a rose to him that showeth thee a thorn. To thee there is always a rose; to him there is a thorn for ever more.

Have no faith in this perishable body. Remember the Lord by all your breaths; that is the only way to salvation.

"Why dost thou trample upon me"? crieth the earth to potter, " A day will come when I shall trample upon thee".

The body is an inn and the mind a bird that has willingly taken a lodging in it . it is but a truism that none is none's relative.

'Virtue', abides where there is compassion, 'vice' where there is greed; 'death' where there is wrath, and the Lord Himself where there is forgiveness.

Every forest does not contain a sandal tree; every army does not contain a real soldier; every sea does not contain pearls; even so, a sadhu or a saint or a Mahatma is not found everywhere in the world.

Have patience; everything comes out in time. The gardener waters the plants daily, but it bears fruit only in season.

If I turn the whole earth in to paper, all the trees in to pens and the seven seas in to ink, even then the greatness of the lord cannot be fully described.

There is no greater evil than a bad word; it burns everything into ashes. A kind word is, on the contrary, like rain that falls in nectar-like torrents.

A word is priceless if one knows how to use it. Let every word be weighed in the scales of the heart before it is given out.

Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today, nor till the evening what yo can do this very momentl for you know not when death may overtake you, upsetting all your plans.

He alone is the hero who has all the five senses at his command. He who no such control never approaches the Lord.

A dumb man, having tasted sugar, cannot express its taste, Even so, the experience of Self-realisation can not be expressed.

Just as sugar toys are made of sugar and sugar exists in all os them, even so, the whole universe exists in Brahman and Brahman in it.

The sugar and the sugar toys are not two things ; they both are one. similarly , when real knowledge dawns the manifold universe appears as one.

Just as the tree is in the seed and the seed in the tree, even so is the world in Brahman.

When Kabir died, his body was claimed by both the Hindus and the Mohammedans, the king of Kashi, with the thousands of Hindus wanted to cremate the body and the Mohemmedans wanted to bury it, while they were quarrelling, Kabir's apparition appeared and said, " I was neither a Hindu nor a Mohammedan, I was both, I was nothing, Iwas all, I discern God in both, There is no Hindu and no Mussalman. To him who is free from delusion, Hindu and Mussalman are the same. Remove the shroud and behold the miracle!".

The shroud was removed, a large quantity of flowers were seen under it, half of the flowers were taken by the King of Kashi and cremated on the bank of holy Ganges, the ashes were buried and a temple was built, the temple is known by the name of Kabir Chaura, and the remaining half flowers were buried by Mohammedans at Maghar where Kabir passed away, a mosque was build over the grave. This is a place of pilgrimage for the Mohammedans.

Sincerity: Is it not his sincerity which distinguishes the superior man.

Truthfulness: What the superior man requires is that in what he says there may be nothing inaccurate.

Purity of thought and action: The superior man must be watchful over himself when alone.

Love of Truth: The superior man is anxious lest he should not get truth, he is not anxious lest poverty comes upon him.

Rectitude: The superior man thinks of the virtue and ordinary man thinks about the comfort.

Broad-Mindedness: The superior man honours talent and virtue and bears with all, he praises the good and pities the incompetent.

Moderation: The superior man conforms to the path of the middle course.

Reserve power: That where in the superior man can not be equalled is this, his worth which other men can not see.

Kung Fu Tse speaks of the superior or the ideal man thus : " The superior man is a catholic and not a partisan, he does what is proper to the position in which he is. he does not wish to go beyond it, he finds himself in no position in which is not himself.
" The scholar considers honesty and good faith to be his coat of mail and helmet, propriety and righteousness to be his shield and buckler, He walks along bearing over his head benevolence, he dwells holding righteousness in his arms before him.

The governament may be violently oppressive, but he does not change his course, such is the way in which he maintains himself.

Sade Sati- Kantaka Sani - ( 7,1/2 years of Saturn)

ॐ श्री गुरावे नमः !

Sade Sati! when informed by an astrologer, a chill runs down the spine of the native, because saturn is known for his rigorous punishments and disciplining acts, and fortunately for us humans it comes at least three times in a life time. When Sani/Saturn transits/moves into the 12th sign/house from the Natal Chandra/Moon Sade Sati ( 7,1/2) period of Sani/Saturn is initiated and it stays for 2, 1/2 years in that house, major effects are on domestic life, relations, and all those things will be effected which are connected with the 12th house, next step is Sani/Saturn transits into the First sign/house from Chandra/Moon, here again it stays for 2,1/2 years and the major effects here are on general life on the Native, reputation, finance, life sustaining abilities fall asunder, then Sani/Saturn transits into the 2nd sign/house from Chandra/Moon, here the main effects are and financial losses and danger from Government action.

Intensity of the effect would be increased many folds if, Chandra/Moon is posited with the Lagna, and the effects would be same as Chandra/Moon if Sani/Saturn transits into 12th from the Lagna also, many people might not agree with it, but it is very likely the effects would be teh same, again the main important ting controlling it would be the strength and position of Sani/Saturn

Sade sati or 7 1/2 years period of saturn comes at least three times in a life time, the first time mostly effects native's parents, the second time it effects native in his education or profession, the third time it effects mostly his health, and profession. Sani/Saturn's other form as disciplinarian, is Kantaka Sani: Kantaka means like Thorn.
Whenever Saturn Transits on the 1st, 4th, 8th or 10th from the Chandra/Moon, Lagna/Ascendent or Arudha Lagna (AL), such transit is called Kantaka Sani, as the name suggests the life of the Native sould turn like falling into a pit full of thorns.

There are many various thoughts and views about Sade Sati, the effects of Sade Sati are mild for some and fatal for some, and for some it might prove to be a boon, it all depends on the position and auspiciousness of Chandra/Moon and Sani/Saturn, each 2 1/2 years period of Sani/Saturn in each Rasi/Sign/house is called Dhaiya, and in one Sade Sati cycle there are three dhaiya's, the second dhaiya effects more, exceptions are if the second dhaiya occurs in libra (Saturn is exalted here), capricorn, (Saturn own's this house) Aquarius (Moolatrikona of Saturn) at the same time if the second dhaiya is in Aries ( Saturn is debilitated in this house) then the effects are very fatal. Or If Sani/Saturn is Yogakaraka, the effects are minimal etc.

I feel otherwise, Stronger the Sani/Saturn, fatal will be the Sade sati effects, and weaker the Sani/Saturn, minimal will be the Sade sati effects. If Sani/Saturn is Atmakaraka or If Sani Mahadasa is running, the Sade sati effects will be very Fatal.

Reason: We have to take the past births in to consideration, A soul has to go through many cycles of birth and death before it is pure enough to enter a human soul,, and again in this stage, it has to purify itself to reach higher levels of Human existence and finally towards the final emancipation or liberation, and this is not possible without going through the fire, and the fire is made available by Grah like Saturn, every soul gets Sani/Saturn as a Atmakaraka but only after many human births, It is like a Final examination, If the soul passes this test, it moves ahead towards liberation in this birth or teh next following birth, but if it fails, it moves back in the order of other Grah's/planets, the cycle begins again. how it works, Sani forces the native so hard that native is left with no option but look towards the sky, and turn Spiritual, all people who had a hard Sade Sati, did turn and do turn Spiritual, and this is the whole purpose of Sani/Saturn being Hard on the native, the purification process starts, which if followed with determination will lead to liberation or final emancipation. When a native is not ready for the final examination the native will never take birth with Strong Saturn, he or she always will have weak Saturn, A strong Sani/Saturn also suggests that the native is ready for final emancipation, it sounds like Final examination :-).

When a child enters school, he starts his education but to test his knowledge the school conducts three examinations, quarterly, half yearly and final examination atleast in India,(Canada the system is different), and out of all exams the half yearly exam is most dreadful to most of the children, because at that time most of them are not serious and the paper mostly appears tough, same situation on this arena called earth, it is like the school and the Grah Sani/Saturn the head master of examinations, he comes atleast three times to test, Where we are standing? and How we are standing?.

Depending on our previous exam results, the next paper is set, and then follows the punishment. Every time Sani/Saturn is in Retrograde motion, it is recording time, every event and every action of the native is recorded for further assessement, the awards from Sani/Saturn are also great, most people have won great accolades due Sani/Saturn, Sani deva is a devotee of Lord Krishna.

Small story: There was this good natured and humble priest, who lived for the people and the society, in his entire life he had hardly commited a sin, even thoughts are as pure as dew, he worked as a priest in a temple, but Sani/Saturn has to do his duty, so one day Sani deva/Saturn appears and informs the priest that it is time for him for some punishment, the priest is surprised and says" Hey deva ! I do not remember having committed any crime or sin, but if you say so, you must be right, what is the punishment for me, Saturn says, 'yes', your record is impeccable but still you deserve 7 ,1/2 minutes of stress and tension for your sins, that is your punishment.
priest thinks ok it is just 7 1/2 minutes only, and he rests and continues with his routine.

One fine day, the priest who happens to open the temple everyday falls little sick and sleeps little longer, meanwhile the temple manager reaches the temple and opens the door and to his astonishment he finds the golden crown of the diety missing, he runs out shouting theft! theft! theft!.

The whole town becomes tense and they reach priests house and enquire about the crown, the priest pleads not guilty, but the manager says: 'No!', He is the last one to leave the temple so it is him, he is the thief and follows meaningless insults from impatient crowd, for 7 1/2 minutes priest goes through the tension and confusion, it appears like his mind has been taken over by some power, after that the priest's mind starts working again, he tells the manager to check the place properly, they all go back to the temple and search for the crown, and they all find the crown neatly placed behind the diety, priest takes a sigh of relief, the manager feels extremely bad for his behaviour and for insulting the priest.

Now decide based on your own record, how many minutes of such tension and punishment we deserve, one thing is sure Saturn will not appear to tell us our record, the punishment will sure arrive with out intimation. but Astrology and little knoweldge of your own Horoscope chart can actually save you from great peril, one can actually prepare oneself to face those hardships for 7 1/2 years.

e.g.1

A person never gave much attention oor sat for few minutes to open his heart in front of a deity, and his wife almost every day devotes little of her time to sing or chant praises of GOD, both get Sade Sati at the same time, The person goes through such a hard time that he runs to every temple and GOD for help, but the women flows through that period like nothing happened, so what made this difference, is it the auspiciousness of their respective Moon's and Sani/Saturn, may be little but the main reason is the Spiritual funds of the person, his spiritual savings account was empty and her account was having enough spiritual funds to substantiate in that hard time, so dear folks, open a Spiritual savings account immediately, does not matter to which religion, sect you belong and to which deity/saint you offer your devotion, do it atleast as a routine and make it a recurring savings account, save your spiritual funds for the future. ;-)

So how it works, when Saturn is in 12th house, the house of loss, Saturn increases the size of teh hole through which teh loss takes place, the native is bound to loose all those things attached with the sign in his/her natal chart, and also those things which 12th house is connected with, (See my earlier posts), then the Saturn moves to the sign with Chandra/Moon, but if this house also has Ascendent then teh effects might be more harsher, it will effect the general life, income, job, health, relations, fame or reputation etc., then the last 2 1/2 years, the second house from Chandra/Moon and if Ascendent is also present with Chandra/Moon, then the money, health, wealth, assets all will vanish, if not careful.

Check the Astakavarga chart for the number of points Sani/Saturn has in these three signs, the general opinion is, if the points are 4 or less than 4, the effects will be harsh and if the points are 5 or more, then the effects might be mild, but here I have a contradicting opinion, as Sani/Saturn is a malefic Grah/planet, the effects will be mild if the points are 4 or less and the effects will be very harsh if 5 or more, in a way the harshness of the effects will increase with increase in number of points in these three signs.

As Sani/Saturn rules materialism, it is Sani/Saturn alone who wil award with material success, but only based on the report card of the native.

The things will ease out once Saturn moves into the Third house from Moon, normally this time is rewarding time, the rewards will come based on the report card generated during the 7 1/2 years, and how the native dealt with his tensions, stress and problems, did he/she open a Spiritual savings account and how much did they save in that account etc.
Then comes Kantaka sani, :-))

Suggestion:
Native going through the Sade Sati should devote time to appease Lord Krishna, and surrender himself/herself to Lord Krishna, every thing floats away, but if the native resists and tries his free will, the challenge will continue to grow till he falters, so easy, surrender yourself to Lord Krishna and if possible chant Sani Stotram. there are many remedies suggested by Sage Paracara but again one need to see carefully the horoscope for most suitable remedy, the best get the master key, Lord Krishna. everything will float away, Trust me!:-).
