Lagna (Ascendent)

Lagna (Ascendent) : This is the sign that rises in the eastern horizon at the time of the birth of a native, and it determines the physical appearance, general health, longevity and other functional and dysfunctional traits in a native, depending on the Rasi and position of the lord of that Rasi.

In Jyotish, normal lagna is used to draw inference about the native’s life in general, but to get information in specific areas like wealth, business, prosperity, power, marriage etc, the Rasi/House with the special 'lagna's is taken as the first house.

The special lagna's I have already listed in my previous post " Fundamentals of Jyotish Part I", are used for various determinations like business, health, wealth etc.
This sign changes in every two hours and all 12 signs of the zodiac ascend in one period of 24 hours. So the sign ascending at the instant of birth happens to be the first house in the birth chart or the horoscope.

Very important features that should be determined from the first house are, character of the native, any curse from past life, any wrath of a deity etc.

The bottom line is that the lagna establishes the kind of body, health, life or endurance, as well as noticeable qualities of an individual evident to the world. The lagna varies with the time of the day and the place. So people belonging to all the 12 signs are born on the earth at any given moment or instance. It is described in terms of longitude of the position of the moon. Vedic astrology is based on sidereal astrology that assumes that the stars have a fixed position against which motion of planets is measured.

Lagna: It more or less represents the character, physical appearance, intelligence and attitude of the native, in addition to this the soul is represented by Sun and mind is represented by Moon, the 10th house (Karma bhava) represents the purpose of the birth.
all these traits are the actual traits of the native and not the hype created by the world or traits perceived by the world.

Physical Attributes is influenced by the element of the house with lagna ( Ascendant).

Fire: ( Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) --Robust physique

Earth:(Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)--Stout

Air:( Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)-- Thin

Water:(Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)--Plump with soft muscles

Native with different Lagna/ Moon sign shall have different complexion and it is influenced by:

Surya (Sun)- Dark red complexion

Chandra (Moon)- Fair complexion

Kuja (Mars)- Reddish complexion, short stature

Budh (Mercury)- Excellent skin and brownish complexion (like dry grass)

Guru (Jupiter)- Fair complexion with golden yellow tinge

Shukra (Venus)- Dark complexion

Sani (Saturn)- Black complexion (very dark)

While predicting this, take caution and consider the race also, a native with Moon in ascendant will be fare in complexion when compared with others of the same race with other Grah's (Planets), similarly a native with Sani (Saturn) will be darkest out of all the people with in the same race.

Guna (Character or Nature) is influenced by the Grah.

Sun, Moon and Jupiter, or one of them or two of them in Lagna means the native is of Sattvik Guna in a general sense. which also means knowledge, just, wisdom and philanthropy.

Venus and Mercury, means native is of Rajasik guna. which also means passion and drive.

Mars and Saturn means native is of Tamasik Guna. which also means Anger, impatience, ignorance, destructive nature.

Small story to understand these Guna.

Bhrigu Maharaj (saint) used to have a third eye in his feet and which gave him lot of power and anger, as a result he cursed many including lord Shiva, but Lord Shiva is of Tamasik nature, so lot of friction took place between them.

When Bhrigu Maharaj went to see Lord Vishnu, Lord Vishnu happens to be sleep,
this made Bhrigu very angry and he kicked Lord Vishnu on his chest, Lord Vishnu being Sattvik, immediately took note of the saint and asked him politely " Hey sage did your kicking cause any pain to your feet, let me see and give it a little massage", and he took Bhrigu's feet in his hands and with his thumb destroyed the third eye in Bhrigu's feet, this is being sattvik.

On the other hand Lord shiva (Tamasik) when faced with Bhrigu almost tries to kill him with raging anger but stops because of Bhrigu was supposed to carry out some good work on the earth, and Lord Brahma is of Rajasik nature, busy with his creation and his three consorts and he also ignores Bhrigu and gets a curse in return.

This story tell us clearly what sattvik, Rajasik and Tamasik means, because lots of people think sattvik means, being extremely polite and soft only, no it doesn't.

Lord Ramachandra had Jupiter (Exalted) and Moon (Own sign) in his Lagna in Karkataka (Cancer) and we all know his character, nature and attitude, he is called as Purushottama.

To understand the physical attributes of natives, the Grah posited in Lagna and the lord of the sign, called Lagneca, needs to be studied, e.g. If the Lagna is in Mithuna (Gemini) then Lagneca will be Budh (Mercury), hence the position of Mercury becomes very important, dhristi of Grah from other signs on Lagna is also important to see if it is afflicted or further blessed, Also see the house in which Lagnecca is posited that house is called Paka Lagna, and the lord of that house is called as pakeca, inter exchange between Lagneca and Pakeca is considered very good.

The house which is holding the Lagna will also have a large influence on the characteristics of the native, so the properties of each house will also apply here.

Bhadhakesha:

lord of 11th house for Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn,
lord of 9th house for Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius,
lord of 7th house for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces,

are Bhadhakesha meaning lord of obstacles, and if this lord of obstacles is posited in Lagna, it means some curse or wrath of some diety, the cause and reason of the wrath or curse is seen with the malefic grah (Saturn, Mars, Rahu) or upagrah (Gulika) posited in the 12th house from the house with Bhadhakesha.

If bhadakesha is posited in the Lagna sign, it means that the image of some diety was mutilated (Rahu or Gulika) or broken (Mars) or desecrated (Saturn by dirt) & ( Sun by birds).

To determine the remedy for the same the Avastha of the Grah needs to be determined first and if Rahu is posited in the 12th from Lagna and bhadhakesha is posited in the Lagna, the native is sure cursed by a Sarpent (Devine Sarpa devata), the remedy is music and singing.

but again see if the 12th house is a movable, fixed or dual sign, the remedy would be different for each sign.

If any other Grah is posited with the bhadhakesha in Lagna, check to which sign/house that Grah hold the lordship, if the lord of the 2nd house is conjoined with the bhadhakesh in Lagna, then the hardships are due to the kuladevata, or the worship of Kuladevata in the previous birth was stopped, so the remedy would be to resume the worship.

The general readings are always made with Lagna as the initial point, once the basic information is determined with the lagna, then move to other points of reference like AL, UL, and other special lagnas etc.

Kabir

Kabir ( 1440 A.D. ---- 1519 A.D.) Kashi, India, was found on a lotus leaf in a lake called Lahar Talao near Kashi. and was found by Niru and Nima, a childless Mohammedan weaver.

Sayings of Kabir:

The life is passed in turning the beads, but the darkness of the heart is not destroyed, leave the turning of beads by the hand, but turn the beads of your mind.

If you have no devotion to God, you will not gain anything by pilgrimage. you may roam over the country and yet your heart wil be impure. The man who has gone to Varanasi to see Lord Viswanath, but has not destroyed hypocrisy, lust and greed and has no devotion , will gain nothing.

I am very fond of the words of my sweetheart-Beloved ( GOD). I do not get any solace if anybody tries to console me in other ways. If you make a fish lie on a golden cot and give it Ambrosia to drink, it will surely die in no time.

The diamond appraiser only can know the value of the diamond, Kabir says: Only he who has developed devotion can attain God.

Show thou a rose to him that showeth thee a thorn. To thee there is always a rose; to him there is a thorn for ever more.

Have no faith in this perishable body. Remember the Lord by all your breaths; that is the only way to salvation.

"Why dost thou trample upon me"? crieth the earth to potter, " A day will come when I shall trample upon thee".

The body is an inn and the mind a bird that has willingly taken a lodging in it . it is but a truism that none is none's relative.

'Virtue', abides where there is compassion, 'vice' where there is greed; 'death' where there is wrath, and the Lord Himself where there is forgiveness.

Every forest does not contain a sandal tree; every army does not contain a real soldier; every sea does not contain pearls; even so, a sadhu or a saint or a Mahatma is not found everywhere in the world.

Have patience; everything comes out in time. The gardener waters the plants daily, but it bears fruit only in season.

If I turn the whole earth in to paper, all the trees in to pens and the seven seas in to ink, even then the greatness of the lord cannot be fully described.

There is no greater evil than a bad word; it burns everything into ashes. A kind word is, on the contrary, like rain that falls in nectar-like torrents.

A word is priceless if one knows how to use it. Let every word be weighed in the scales of the heart before it is given out.

Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today, nor till the evening what yo can do this very momentl for you know not when death may overtake you, upsetting all your plans.

He alone is the hero who has all the five senses at his command. He who no such control never approaches the Lord.

A dumb man, having tasted sugar, cannot express its taste, Even so, the experience of Self-realisation can not be expressed.

Just as sugar toys are made of sugar and sugar exists in all os them, even so, the whole universe exists in Brahman and Brahman in it.

The sugar and the sugar toys are not two things ; they both are one. similarly , when real knowledge dawns the manifold universe appears as one.

Just as the tree is in the seed and the seed in the tree, even so is the world in Brahman.

When Kabir died, his body was claimed by both the Hindus and the Mohammedans, the king of Kashi, with the thousands of Hindus wanted to cremate the body and the Mohemmedans wanted to bury it, while they were quarrelling, Kabir's apparition appeared and said, " I was neither a Hindu nor a Mohammedan, I was both, I was nothing, Iwas all, I discern God in both, There is no Hindu and no Mussalman. To him who is free from delusion, Hindu and Mussalman are the same. Remove the shroud and behold the miracle!".

The shroud was removed, a large quantity of flowers were seen under it, half of the flowers were taken by the King of Kashi and cremated on the bank of holy Ganges, the ashes were buried and a temple was built, the temple is known by the name of Kabir Chaura, and the remaining half flowers were buried by Mohammedans at Maghar where Kabir passed away, a mosque was build over the grave. This is a place of pilgrimage for the Mohammedans.

Broad-Mindedness: The superior man honours talent and virtue and bears with all, he praises the good and pities the incompetent.

Moderation: The superior man conforms to the path of the middle course.

Reserve power: That where in the superior man can not be equalled is this, his worth which other men can not see.

Kung Fu Tse speaks of the superior or the ideal man thus : " The superior man is a catholic and not a partisan, he does what is proper to the position in which he is. he does not wish to go beyond it, he finds himself in no position in which is not himself.

" The scholar considers honesty and good faith to be his coat of mail and helmet, propriety and righteousness to be his shield and buckler, He walks along bearing over his head benevolence, he dwells holding righteousness in his arms before him.

The governament may be violently oppressive, but he does not change his course, such is the way in which he maintains himself.

Shri Hanuman Chalisa (देवनागरी)

With the dust of Guru's Lotus feet, I clean the mirror of my mind and then narrate the sacred glory of Sri Ram Chandra, The Supereme among the Raghu dynasty. The giver of the four attainments of life.

Knowing myself to be ignorant, I urge you, O Hanuman, The son of Pavan! O Lord! kindly bestow on me strength, wisdom and knowledge, removing all my miseries and blemishes.

Victory of Thee, O Hanuman, Ocean of wisdom and virtue, victory to the Lord of monkeys who is well known in all the three worlds

You, the Divine messager of Ram and repository of immeasurable strength, are also known as Anjaniputra and known as the son of the wind -Pavanputra.

Oh Hanumanji! You are valiant and brave, with a body like lightening. You are the dispeller of darkness of evil thoughts and companion of good sense and wisdom.

Shri Hanumanji's physique is golden coloured. His dress is pretty, wearing 'Kundals' ear-rings and his hairs are long and curly.

Shri Hanumanji is holding in one hand a lighting bolt and in the other a banner with sacred thread across his shoulder.

Oh Hanumanji! You are the emanation of 'SHIVA' and you delight Shri Kesri. Being ever effulgent, you hold vast sway over the universe. The entire world proptiates. You are adorable of all.

You appeared before Sita in a diminutive form and spoke to her, while you assumed an awesome form and struck terror by setting Lanka on fire.

He, with his terrible form, killed demons in Lanka and performed all acts of Shri Ram.

When Hanumanji revived Lakshman alive after bringing 'Sanjivani herb' Shri Ram took him in his deep embrace, his heart full of joy.

Shri Ram extolled Hanumanji's excellence and remarked, "you are as dear to me as my own brother Bharat"

Shri Ram embraced Hanumanji saying: "Let the thousand - tongued sheshnaag sing your glories"

What to talk of denizens of the earth like poets and scholars etc. even Gods like Yamraj, Kuber, and Digpal fail to narrate Hanuman's greatness in toto.

Hanumanji gulped, the SUN at distance of sixteen thousand miles considering it to be a sweet fruit.

Carrying the Lord Rama's ring in his mouth, he went across the ocean. There is no wonder in that.
